Biography
Sylvie Blum-Reid is associate professor of French and film. She received her licence d’Anglais from Paris III-Sorbonne Nouvelle, her M.A. in French and Ph.D. in French & Film from the University of Iowa. She taught at Miami University (Ohio) before joining the University of Florida French faculty in 1995. Blum-Reid taught two summers at the UF Study abroad program in Avignon. New courses that she created include: Masculinity in French cinema, Francophone Women and Film, Francophone postcolonial cinema, the Films of Jacques Tati, World War II and French cinema, European Cinemas, European Identities. In the subject area of French literature and European cultural studies: she teaches Modern theatre, Introduction to Literature II, Women writing in French, as well as language courses. She was undergraduate Advisor from 2003 to 2010.
Blum-Reid is the author of East-West Encounters. Franco-Asian Cinema and Literature (London: Wallflower press). Her articles appear in such film, literary and cultural journals as Quarterly Review of Film and Video, Portal: Journal of Multidisciplinary International Studies, Inter-Asia Cultural Studies, Iris, and Sites, The Journal of 20th Century Contemporary French Studies, The Journal of Durassian Studies, Simone de Beauvoir Studies, Le Maghreb Littéraire, The Contemporary Journal of French and Francophone Studies and Europe Plurilingue. Her research and teaching interests include literature, travel narratives, photography, 1930s cinema and culture in France, expatriate female artists in the interwar period, culinary practices, and creative writing. She is currently at work on a book-length study on travel narratives in European cinema.
